Filling up a notebook with things to do!

As you may well know by now I am a giant believer in 'ToDo' lists. Never leave home without one! This week my notebook has been filling up with things that I need to get done. Between working full time, renovating a house, and planning a wedding my dear little notebook sure has its work cut out for it!

Picnic Notebook from Kikki K
I have been slamming busy with work- working two nights this week, my precious Saturday, and two nights next week- and still feeling as though I'm not managing to get everything done! To top that off we have been painting the undercoat in the extension in every spare second of time. The routine has pretty much been: come home, get changed into painting clothes, paint, remember to eat, paint, shower, sleep.

I'm also waiting on getting our Save The Date cards, which I am a little excited to send out. I thought they would have arrived by now, but even if they had I wouldn't have had time to address them and get them in the post anyway! Busy as. On the plus side we really are getting satisfaction out of getting the painting done, even if we are walking zombies due to hard work and lack of sleep!

The kitchen arrived today and will be(mostly) installed over the next few days, the floorboards arrived and are acclimating in the bedroom, we've undercoated the living/kitchen/dining area and the bedroom/walk-in robe, the retaining walls in the garden will get started early next week, and the tiling in the ensuite is due to begin on Monday. It really is all happening!

PYD Design Markets.

We're slammin' busy this weekend painting the house and running errands, but I think I have managed to squeeze a little time in our schedule to make a trip to the PYD design markets in Waterloo. In between coats of paint, of course!

There will be a whole bunch of amazing designers from fashion to jewellery, homewares to art. Just in time for Christmas too! The markets host over 60 designers and artisans, as well as the resident retailers. Should be great! I'm sure I'll find a million billion things that I want for the house, and get a little bit of my Christmas shopping out of the way. Maybe I'll see you there?

Precious hand printed gift tags.

This is a  nice and easy printmaking activity that can have gorgeous results, and you can do it in less than half an hour! Great for kids too, and easier that you'd think to clean up. Nothing adds a special touch to a gift like a handmade element, and these gift tags are just so sweet!

'Tis the season for gift wrapping!
You will need; Ballpoint pens (I used the brand new Paper Mate InkJoy), scissors, cardboard, block printing ink, two rollers, a palette knife or spoon, and some scratchfoam board. The scratchfoam is available from art and craft stores and is the same stuff used to make Styrofoam coffee cups.

Tape some butcher's paper to the table to create your workspace

If you are using small pieces of cardboard you will need to trim the scratchfoam so that it is smaller than the area of the cardboard. To mark out make sure that you press very, very lightly or that you use a texta. Any impressions that you make on the foam will print on to your card.

The printing surface is created by your pen making an impression in the scratchfoam. You don't need to press very hard, just with enough pressure to make an indentation. To make gift tags I used a shipping tag shape. I drew it free-hand for a quirky feel, but you could just as easily trace around one you have kicking around. Remember that everything will print backwards, so if you are writing you will need to be tricky and mirror image it.

Laying out your equipment before you print will make sure it goes smoothly

You need to roll your ink out a little on the paper until it becomes tacky. This makes sure that it spreads evenly on to your printing plate. You can tell when it's ready because it starts to make a sticky kind of noise as you roll and it forms little peaks.

Roll your ink out gently and evenly on your scratchfoam printing plate. Again, it is ready when the ink is tacky. Ensure that you don't apply too much pressure at this stage or you will flatten the foam and ruin your plate.

Place your plate on top of the paper being super careful not to move it once it has been placed or it will smudge like nobody's business. Use a firm and even pressure to roll across the back of the plate with your clean roller, taking special care to cover all the edges. You can make several prints from the same plate, just re-ink in between.

Peel your paper off the print...voila!
Easy, right? My prints have a textured appearance because I printed on to textured card. If you want a smooth, clean impression then simply use smooth card. Once they are dry all you have to do is trim them to shape and punch a hole if so desired.

Just un-stick your paper from the table to clean up
Now you have a stack of cute tags to attach to gifts! You can use this printing technique for greeting cards and all kinds of things. Scratchfoam prints can look striking framed as well. Simple to design, simple to print, lovely to give!

InkJoy indeed!

If there's one thing I am fussy about it is pens. I don't want to be writing with just any old pen and I have different pens for different purposes. It is important to me to have a pen that suits the purpose, feels good in my hand, and writes like a dream.

Paper Mate InkJoy Pens

When the Paper Mate's people contacted me last week to ask if I would like to try out some of their new pens I jumped at the chance! I've always been a huge fan of the writing action of their classic Kilometrico, but not as satisfied with the way it sits in the hand- it's too skinny to be a truly comfortable pen.

Thankfully, the InkJoy range eliminates that problem! It is a really great little pen, cheap and cheerful with a range of colours to satisfy any pen enthusiast. It glides across the page without leaving messy blobs of ink and is comfortable enough to use when writing even the most arduous 'todo' list.

Paper Mate has been kind enough to provide some of these fantastic pens for a Dear Little House giveaway! The winner will receive a big bunch of Paper Mate's new InkJoy pens, as well as an exclusive sneak preview pack of the new Dear Little House greeting cards which will be available for purchase in the new year.

All you need to do to enter is leave a comment telling me the first thing you would write with your new InkJoy! For bonus entries you can share a link to this giveaway on your facebook/twitter/blog and pop back here and leave a comment to let me know you've shared. Entries close on Wednesday 30th November at Midnight AEDST and will be drawn at random.

You've got to be in it to win it! Also, stay tuned for a great craft activity using these funky new InkJoy pens!

A great week of progress!

Things have really been happening around here on the renovation front. With the big push on for the back section to be 'liveable' by Christmas it is all hands on deck to make it happen!

Bi fold doors ready for installation
The windows came last week and were installed. I am so glad that we went for bi folds, even though Michael just about passed out at the cost. They look so magnificent!

View from the "deck"
This is how the house looks from the back "deck". The use of inverted commas signifies the fact that there is not yet a deck at all, but that's where it is supposed to go! Looking great! The plasterers have been busy this week for certain.

View looking out from the kitchen
Finally it feels like the place is coming together. The interior walls have made a world of difference, I am beginning to think that we may have some semblance of a finished extension in time for family Christmas. Of course, I have a contingency plan because we have had that many set backs that I don't want to pin all hopes on it.

Looking out from the master bedroom
How nice do the bi folds in the master bed look? Pretty snazzy. I also figured out today that we will be able to block the line of sight from the townhouse opposite with a few strategically placed planter boxes on the balcony.

Looking into the den of the enemy
Looking from the other perspective, it is less finished! The possum is still hanging out in the roof cavity and having a grand old time causing havoc around the general vicinity.

Possum poop
Evidence of the possum invasion. He (she?) is pooping all over the damn place! We saw him the other day when we were checking out the progress. Soon the time will come when he needs to move on and relocate to his possum box.

Insulation goodness
Today they installed much of the insulation upstairs. There is a big pile of it in our walk-in robe (pictured) and it looks like it would be a bunch of fun to launch myself at it. Unfortunately, that would make for a very itchy and uncomfortable afternoon.

What a mess!
This is the pile of junk left over from the plastering process. I'm choosing to ignore the fact that my precious ghost chairs are in there amongst the mess. Michael assures me that they will scrub up fine. I am sceptical, to say the least.

Dino the bricklayer
Dino the bricklayer is my new best friend. He calls me 'Natalina' in a strong Italian accent. Every morning he says "Good-a-morn Natalina! You-a goin' to work? I-a move-a da car in to you car spok?" I like having a spok to park my car, so much more fulfilling than a car spot. Dino has been a friend of Michael's family since forever, in fact he has laid the bricks for every house that Michael has ever lived in!

Little jars of jellies.

I love to give people a little token of my appreciation when they go out of their way to help me. There's nothing like a little recognition for going over and above! A few weeks ago I made some lolly jars for some colleagues, this time I am making a cute little variation on the same theme.

Jelly Bellys in a little tiny jar
I bought some teeny tiny little jars with cute-as-pie cork stoppers on eBay and filled them up with a bunch of colour coordinated Jelly Belly jelly beans. They look pretty, don't they?

I chose to decorate some coloured gift tags with some masking stickers. I stamped some of them and I hand wrote on some of them with my pretty fountain pen. Nothing like a hand-made touch! Naturally, I wrote a personalised thank you note on the back of each tag.

Gorgeous teal paper twine from Bespoke
So there you go. Cute, thoughtful, fun, and simple! A dear little thank you with that extra special hand-made something. I can't wait to deliver them tomorrow!

Beautiful blue glass.

I picked this dear little thing up on eBay a little while ago, and it goes nicely with a clear glass one that belonged to my grandparents. Cut glass is so interesting, especially in this quilted pattern, it reflects light quite prettily.

Blue cut glass decanter
Isn't it darling? I've always have a bit of a penchant for anything made of blue glass, and this is such a gorgeous teal blue colour. I'm actually using it as a book-end at the moment, but I'm working on a blue/green accent for the new kitchen so it may well end up there. Have you scooped up any eBay bargains recently?

An oven in the lounge room?

Our oven and range hood were delivered today. They were supposed to take it around and place it in the new kitchen (which is still just and empty room) but for some reason they refused. Possibly because it was raining? So now it is in our lounge room.

The best place for an oven
Awesome. Oh well, we'll have to get a bunch of burly friends to help us take it back out the front door, down the stairs, up the side of the house, and up in to the extension. In the meantime we will have to live around the giant oven in our lounge room.

Persistent Possum.

When they ripped the back half of our roof off to build the extension there was an unanticipated side effect. A little possum, who I later remembered had lived in the now demolished shed, moved on in and decided to make our roof/wall cavity his new home. Uh oh. Cue a nightly possum party that has been keeping us both awake. With the windows arriving today soon little poss will be unable to get OUT of the house. So it is time to move him on.

Chateau de Possum
Poor little possum. I feel terrible that he is going to be evicted from his home, but at the same time he clearly cannot go on living in our roof cavity because a) it is killing my sleep and b) he will be trapped inside there once the plasterboard goes in. So I rang WIRES and purchased a possum nesting box for him. It has been installed in a nice, safe fork of our tree and over the next few days we will try to convince him to relocate.

Possums are really territorial and often die if relocated improperly. The current law in our state dictates that if a possum is trapped it must be released again within the boundary of your property. We would rather not have to put him through the trauma of having him trapped. The plan is to make him aware of the box, entice him to try the box, then try to be really clever and lock him out of the house.

Phase one went well last night; I put apple in the box, halfway up the tree, and near the base of the tree. He did pop in  because this morning all the apple was gone, but he did return to the roof at about 4am. Tonight I will try to get him in there again by the same method. I'll have to guess when he goes out to feed and once the windows/doors are in we will lock him out. He will know that he can go to the box and that the box is good. Sound like a plan? Last resort we will have to get a possum trapper in to remove him from the roof.
